Letter of Introduction (posted January 20)

So, I guess to introduce myself I will start off with who I am. My names Shannon Wright I am 16 (almost 17) and a junior at Roosevelt. I like to write a lot and I struggle through AP Lang. Mostly I struggle with deadlines, like this one. I have been writing since I was 6 and have loved it ever since. I am not very good with essays or non fiction. I prefer creative writing and hope to become a published author one day. I am not into sports very much but I started doing Colorguard this year and loved it. If you don't know what Colorguard is, Colorguard is the flag girls in marching bands. I also have a job that keeps me busy most of the time so if I miss a deadline it is usually because I worked the night before and was too tired to even look at the computer when I got home. For my personality, I am usually a pretty up beat person but I don't talk to people a lot if I don't know them well. I hope to gain a lot of good experience during AP Lang this year.

Personal Reflection on Topic of Inquiry(posted January 27 -- Peer Response January 29

I grew up in a small town in Iowa. When I was eleven my family and I moved to Des Moines, which was a big city to me. Even though I had been in school in my old town and had heard about different kinds of people. My town was not very diverse at all so when we moved I met a lot of new people I would have never met there. As weird as it sounds I had never met a gay person before I lived in Des Moines. My new next door neighbors for example are happily gay and living together.

A couple months passed and then I went back to my old town to see a friend of mine. Of course everything was fine, we walked around town and laughed hysterically about the past. Later at night I started talking about Des Moines and my new life. I mentioned my neighbors thinking my friend would find them cool along with me. She said that that sort of thing was okay but that they shouldn't be living together. I asked her what she meant and she continued to explain that it was "gross" and marriage is between a man and a woman. I was taken completely by surprise. This girl I had known since I was born, what she was saying I couldn't digest. I didn't understand why she was saying these things that seemed so unlike her. It now has been five years since I have spoken to her.

I now have numerous gay friends and I am an advocate for Gay Marriage. I feel the same with Gay Marriage as I felt with my friend five years ago. I don't understand why it is such an issue. Especially today Gay Marriage is talked about more than ever. My personal belief is that a person should be allowed to love whom ever they want to love. They should be able to get all the legal benefits of a legal marriage that heterosexual couples get. I don't believe it even needs to be a discussion. I believe simply that love is love. So why is Gay Marriage such an issue?

R.E. I agree with your view that it is talked about way to much and that it has been made into an issue bigger than it ever needed to be. "love is love" that is a strong statement and really helps establish your view on the issue. Dispite minor grammatic changes, the reflection goes very in depth and is very well written

Rough Draft Definition (posted February 3 -- Peer Response February 5)

In the Merriam-Webster dictionary last updated in 2012 it does not have any sort of definition for Same-sex marriage. This dictionary simply states, "The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary." While, the Websters Online dictionary copyrighted in 2006 has the current definition stating, "Two people of the same sex who live together as a family; "the legal status of same-sex marriages has been hotly debated." On the latter site it continues to list different issues that have been pursued regarding same-sex marriage. So what is the definition for Same-sex marriage? Apparently, in some dictionaries the phrase does not exist but, in real life it does.

Same-sex marriage is very much associated with the legal rights of marriage. Yes to love someone and marry them because of that love is a very happy event although, on the flip side there is the entire legal background for marital rights. Which is why the discussion behind legalizing Same-sex Marriage is so hotly debated. When a man and a woman get married they officially get the rights of spouse to the other. For example, if one was to get into an accident the other would be able to go and see them in the hospital as a family member, or if they wanted to buy property together they would be able to put it under both of their names so if one of them died the other would get the property. Now, because in most states Same-sex marriages are not legal then if someone was in the hospital their partner would not be allowed to go and see them because they are legally not considered family. Also if they wanted to own property together they would not be able to share it under both names legally, it would have to go under one name.

In a CBS news article they discuss Same-sex marriage and how other countries of the world are opening up to the idea. "

At least 10 countries - including Argentina, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Belgium and South Africa - have legalized same-sex marriage." It then goes on to say that five U.S. states have legalized Same-sex marriage along with others that allow unions made in other states. We are already heading on the road oflegalizingSame-sex Marriage. It is simply the future and what is coming up next. Currently it is a legal issue that is being sourly debated within the United States a lot. Same-sex Marriage is also a union between two people that love each other very much.

Reflection #1 (posted February 20 -- Peer Response February 22)

I thought my audience for this essay was people in general or maybe people that don't know very much about Same-sex Marriage. My purpose was to educate and prove my point that Same-sex Marriage should be legal in every state in the U.S. Since this is a hotly debated topic in the government and in the news lately I felt this was a very urgent message in the fact that people need to know about these things. I tried to use the tone of urgency mixed with pathos to get the readers attention. I also used definitions from two different dictionaries to grab my readers attention in the beginning.

R>E> I think you did most of these things very well. Although i didnt eversee your sense of urrgency.
Rough Draft Comparison (postedFebruary 24 -- Peer Response February 26 )

When comparing Same-sex Marriage with regular marriage there are not many differences. In Same-sex Marriage it is a binding union between two individuals, and it is the same with regular marriage. Both kinds of marital unions have two life partners in them. Also in Same-sex Marriages the spouse would get legal rights the same as a regular marital spouse. Furthermore, in both marriages the union is between two people that love each other. The one main difference between these types of marriages is that one is legal everywhere and one is not. Same-sex Marriage is still not excepted everywhere as a legitimate legal union. It is also a hotly debated topic in the United States currently as Same-sex couples fight for their right to wed.

The only other difference between the marriages is the simple fact that one marriage consists of one man and one woman while, the other consists of two same-sex life partners. The usual one man and one woman pair that is thought of most often is acceptable everywhere. The marriage between two same-sex life partners is a new concept emerging out of the last 50 years. Both of these marital unions have similarities that make them so similar it is a wonder why one is legal while the other is not. These similarities bring the two together as other people argue they are separate things.

I like your comparison of these two concepts. It has been debated alot and probably should be legal. Some grammar and sentence structure mistakes , but overall great job.

Reflection #2 (posted March 16 -- Peer Response March 25)
I feel as though my comparison essay was not bad but I need to use more persuasion. I don't sound as if I am trying to make a point, I sound as if I am just stating facts about my topic. I will work on that more as my writing hopefully develops.
Rough Draft Argument (posted April 6 -- Peer Response April 8)
Same-sex marriage has been a hot topic throughout the United States especially these past years. Some people believe it is a person's own choice whether or not they should or want to get married to the same-sex. While other think that a marriage between two members of the same sex is against the bible and that it is a grave sin to be gay. This would be the reason why no solution has yet been reached on the issue at hand. Both sides of the argument simply cannot agree on how to go about this. Some states now have legalized same-sex marriage perhaps in the hopes of leading the states remaining to follow in their footsteps. Either way you look at it someone will not be happy with the solution.
Now I can not think of a solution that could possible please everyone but, I believe that if we could all just live in harmony life would be so much easier. Myself personally, I have many gay and lesbian friends. My neighbors that I have known for more than five years are gay and some of the nicest people I know. I do not discuss the issue of same-sex marriage with my gay friends daily but we do mention it to each other every now and then to raise our hopes to the future and cheer on the pro same-sex marriage party. The point I am attempting to make is the one that all of my gay friends live in somewhat of a peaceful world now as teenagers. Although there are the few gruesome horror stories of ignorant children using the slur "fag" or trying to beat up one of my friends for just being homosexual there are worse things. For if one of my friends would ever like to grow up and raise a family with their spouse then it is a sin for them to want to be married to a person of the same sex. Once they are married or perhaps trying to become married people with opposing view points will view them differently. Then it will become somehow personal and against the institution of the christian bible for these two people to be together.
The thing I fear is that one day I will have to watch as my friend is persecuted for being the only thing they can be. They can not change who they are or what they believe in. This is why I believe we should legalize same-sex marriage. I believe we should legalize same-sex marriage everywhere so that no matter where a friend of mine goes they will not find persecution but hope. Hope that they can have that chance to be as happy as all the rest of us who have seemed to forgotten that we can be.

They are the words that gay and lesbian couples feel in their hearts when they make a commitment to each other.
